a HEDSOR HOUSE wedding |
THE BACKGROUND FROM LAURA + MATT
VENUE
EXPERIENCE
I tried to brief the florists on 'English cottage garden' as the theme, and I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. My garden is my great joy (though I'm very much still a beginner) and I want to create a sense of naturalistic beauty which is also still quite stylised/contemporary. I probably sound ridiculous! It will be beautiful no matter what.
Cant remember the canapés for the life of us, but the tasting at Cavendish's showroom was probably the best shared experience of this whole wedding. Matt's quite epicurean and he's drawn it out of me more; we hope the guests enjoy the menu too! I basically don't want anyone to be hungry (!) or bored.
Hedsor House felt 'meant to be' for a host of mundane logistical reasons, but most importantly it felt somehow both elevated and grounded. I always wanted somewhere with a sense of history - a real love for both of us - but didn't want anything overly grand, pretentious/ornate, or indeed too rustic. It really does feel like a fairytale venue for us. Having the church within walking distance was an absolute-must, and we have really enjoyed becoming part of the congregation there. It sits exactly between where my family lives and where Matt and I live, so it felt like it brought both sides of my life together really well. They also have a regenerative landscape ethos, which was the cherry on top.
STORY
ATTIRE + ACCESSORIES
Perhaps uninspiringly... we met via Bumble! But of course after date 1, your story becomes entirely your own.
I guess we both have a real sense that where we are and what we do now is not where we're going to end up/who we are becoming. I spent my 20s travelling and creating things, studying and living on a shoestring. I've spent the last few years delightedly watching my personal (and to an extent professional) life fall into place, but I'm craving more self-actualisation and creative fulfilment again. I write for a living, but it is VERY corporate (the classic 'shadow artist') and I would like to see this coming more to the fore in the next stage. Matt is somewhat similar; we feel as though this wonderful chapter finally having met each other, and having some financial stability and, dare we say it, comfort - has been a long time coming, so we are honestly just enjoying ourselves.
We are both so, so excited to catapault into the next version of what we are creating - together! Our 'perfect day' is somewhere between where we are and what we are building, but I guess it would be something like... waking up somewhere leafy, peaceful, warm (France?) , within striking distance of a town with some vibrant cultural life and a community we're part of, accompanied by four paws. Matt, our resident gastronome, would probably be deciding on a new recipe to cook in our outdoor kitchen, made chiefly with ingredients I've grown on our semi-self-sufficient plot.
We'd almost certainly wear several hats to keep our whole selves engaged; maybe we'd run a small business together; I'd like to be writing; I'd also want to be doing something a bit more active and purpose-driven, probably which would tap into my masters. I can see Matt pursuing a PhD. I don't know: I want a calm and peaceful inner life which is counterbalanced by something very much engaged and meaningful externally. I've no intention of retreating into life as a self-indulgent hermit, but I don't relate anymore to the 'hustle culture' I bought into for so long.
Matt's suit is from Gieves and Hawkes, which traditionally has made all the Army Mess uniforms. He used to love watching his Dad (a retired Officer) wear these when he was young, and it was a nod to this to get his suit made there. Matt is wearing a Victorian pocket watch won in a shooting competition by his great or great great (he says he needs to check) grandfather.
Mine is (a top secret) but it has FLOWERS all over it and I couldn't be more delighted. A lady in (a different) shop told me that I should choose whichever dress brought more of my personality to the day, so it hands-down had to be this one. The running theme will be cornflower blue in the wedding party suits.
MOST EXCITED ABOUT
For me: Conflictingly, both the ceremony, and the ceremony being over. I have no talent to speak of but I was in school & cathedral choirs throughout my teenage years and it embedded such a love of choral music in me. My choir master in sixth form was a really incredible teacher, always very joyful and encouraging, and he won't have known what a difference that made to me at a really really difficult time family-wise. Appallingly, he passed away very young just two years ago. Much of the music I've chosen has stemmed from the interests he awoke in me, and I find it humbling that he quite literally left a legacy which has turned into a lifetime of appreciation of certain composers etc. On the flip side I am honestly petrified I'm going to panic and pass out (it has happened before), so I can't wait for it to be over. I can only imagine Matt's looking forward to the food the most 😀 and we are both quietly excited about our first dance.
HONEYMOON
We are spoiled rotten... we're heading off immediately to a minimoon at the Newt, in Somerset. I keep joking to Matt that it's very on brand that we're basically heading to england's most luxurious vegetable patch for our honeymoon. They've got a fantastic regenerative approach (and a really cool roman villa??) and I'm so excited to relax but also completely nerd out over there. At the end of the week, we're headed to St Lucia for a friend's wedding, but we've turned it into a beach break to really help us wind down. In September we're off on our 'proper' honeymoon... three weeks exploring China, and we absolutely cannottt wait. The perfect mix of interesting history, stunning scenery, fantastic food, lots of new cultures/approaches/views, and a bit of luxury hotels thrown in there too.
PROPOSAL
Matt made my wildest dreams come true. I was lucky enough to spend some time living in Vienna when I was in my early 20s, and I used to walk, most Sundays, around the grounds of Schloss Schoenbrunn. Matt surprised me with a trip to Vienna (I found out at 4am at the airport) and on our very first morning there, he took me to Schoenbrunn. The grounds were entirely deserted, except for one lady (whom I thought we were interrupting, and I was very worried about being rude!!) We went up on the balcony overlooking the main grounds and Matt turned to me and proposed; it turned out this lady had come to photograph the proposal! She caught it all on video then we spent the next hour or so exploring the grounds, taking photos whilst completely giddy, before eating our way around the Christmas market the moment it opened.
FILM
I think I am really hoping for a time capsule, those little moments of people we love, in motion. Any visuals of florals or music captured would be a double win!
special thanks...

Laura and Matt... wow... what a perfect day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for having me there to capture your incredible wedding. It was such a heartfelt day and a real honour to film. I hope your film becomes the time capsule you were hoping for, a way to relive not only the big moments, but all the little ones too. Thank you as well for the last-minute call to capture it all. You two are so perfectly matched, and it was a genuine privilege to witness your love.
